Challenges of African Growth: Opportunities, Constraints, and Strategic Directions By Benno Ndulu, L. Chakraborti, L. Lijane, V. Ramachandran, and J. Wolgin In the last ten years a number of countries in Sub-Saharan Africa have seen substantial improvements in their growth rates, and, consequently a reduction in poverty. However, that growth needs to be deepened and broadened if poverty is to be substantially reduced across the continent. This book reviews forty-five years of economic growth in Africa and other regions and uses the widely diverse growth experiences to form a set of recommendations for increasing economic growth in individual countries across the region. In particular, the report draws key lessons from these experiences to guide and inform growth strategies in Sub-Saharan Africa. Identifying the recent resumption of growth in the region, the study urges African countries, the donor community and other stakeholders to consolidate and continue the momentum by exploiting advantages of being late starters and learning from experiences of other regions.
